Online License Activation

The online license is a license, the usage of which is managed by the License control server (external service of Umalogic) via the Internet.

Attention! The computer with an online license must have access to the License Control Server that can be found on the Internet at ls.umalogic.com;ls2.umalogic.com by one of the following ports - 80, 443 or 5550. The HTTP protocol is required. The access to the Internet is carried out by the License server service called BS_PingHost (Ping.Service.exe).
The domain names mentioned above are full (FQDN). It is recommended to use FQDNs when setting the Internet access, as IP addresses might be changed in the future while FQNDs are likely to remain the same.

To learn the IP address, use the following ping command:

ping address
Here, address is one of the License server addresses (ls.umalogic.com;ls2.umalogic.com) available. The IP address will appear in square brackets in the first row.

Use the online license in case you need to:

  • Get a temporary license of the software.
  • Activate the software on the virtual machine (the computer created with the software emulating a computer).

Warning!

  1. The online license is to be used on one virtual machine instance only. If Umalogic detects an online license being used simultaneously on several machines, it may suspend it.
  2. An error of invalid license may occur, if a virtual machine on which an online license has been activated can move between the hosts with the hardware that differs from the one where the online license has been activated. To resolve this problem, it is required to go through the entire process of activation again (starting from the activation request).
If this is a frequent situation and the number of hosts where a virtual machine with a license is intended to be operated is fixed and not high, it is possible to make an activation request on each of these hosts and, then, send these requests for evaluation to the sales department at mail@umalogic.com. For the given situation, it will be considered to create a unique key that will ensure the license does not get invalid while moving between hosts.

Activation of the online license is similar to the activation of a standard license. To learn more about all the activation steps, read the License Activation article. During the activation process, you will be offered to specify the connection settings. Note that you can also set them up later by means of Ping.Config.exe (see the instruction below).

The validity of your online license will be periodically checked via the Internet, usually once per 24 hours (starting for the time of last successful check) on the condition that the License server has not been restarted. Thus, you are able to use the software without a permanent Internet connection.

Checking of both node-locked and floating licenses is carried out by the License server specified for the current database. Thus, in some cases (in the client-server type of installation particularly) only one License server connected to the Internet is considered to be enough.

Configure Connection Settings

To configure connection settings and check for available licenses use Ping.Config.exe. This utility is stored in the PingService folder of the software installation catalog. Also, this utility can be opened from the Activation tool after activation of an online license is over. Use the Connection properties button for this.

Figure 1

Use the Connection tab (Fig. 1) to specify the proxy server settings that will be used by the License server to connect to the Internet.

To select a proxy server for the Internet connection, activate the Use proxy server option. Then specify the required information in the Address and Port settings. Please contact your network administrator to learn the proxy server settings.

The user name and password to access the proxy server can be set on the same tab.

Attention! The user name and password are specified only after you get an agreement from your network administrator and only in case when it is really needed.

The Check connection button is used to verify that there is a connection between a proxy server and a License control server maintained by the Internet. Having at least one online license is required for this check to happen.

Connection Configuration Options

Attention! It is highly recommended to contact your network administrator before selecting the Internet access configuration option.

By default, the connection is successful when the following conditions are met.

  • The License server service BS_PingHost (Ping.Service.exe) is launched under the System user.
  • The proxy server is not used to connect to the Internet.

This option usually works successfully if the computer itself is connected to the Internet.

In some organizations there is a need for the integrated authentication to access the Internet regardless of whether a proxy server is used or not. In this case, the License server service should be configured. Below, there is an instruction on how to configure the License server service.

  1. Go to Start → Control Panel → System and Security → Windows Tools → Services. After double-clicking on the shortcut, the Services window will be opened (Fig. 2). You can also open the Services app by simply pressing the Windows+R keys and entering the services.msc command.

  2. Find the required BS_PingHost service and open its properties.
  3. Open the Log on tab and select the radio button named This account (Fig. 3).
  4. Tap on the Browse button. In the Select user window, enter the user account name given to you by your network administrator. Then, click OK.
  5. Set the Password for the selected user account and confirm it, then click OK.
Figure 3

Attention! It is not recommended to use the same user account as on the given computer for this purpose. Please, contact your administrator to get the specially generated user account.

The basic authentication can be used instead of an integrated option, if the proxy server does not support the latter. In this case, you should specify a user name and a password on the Connection tab.

Attention! With basic authentication, the password is transmitted over the network in an unencrypted form. Thus, it is not secure to use such authentication. If there is no way to avoid using basic authentication, the special user account should be created and used only for this purpose. Personal account use is allowed in extreme cases only and must be agreed with your network administrator.

Info on the Licenses Installed

To learn about the licenses installed on the current computer, go to the Licenses tab (Fig. 4).

The Refresh button reloads information on all the licenses that are valid on the current computer and updates all online licenses installed on the computer via the Internet.

In case an online license has expired and will not be renewed, the Disable online license check can be selected in order to stop the License server from attempting to obtain and refresh online licenses (Fig. 5).
