Simulation Properties

To run the simulation, use the Run New Simulation menu item (Main Menu → Process Analysis → Run New Simulation). The Simulation Properties Window will be opened. Use it to specify the simulation period and other simulation options. We recommend that you select the simulation duration that equals minimum one business cycle of the company. For example, if your employees work 8 hours a day and 5 days a week, then the business cycle of your company equals one week.

To gather statistics, make sure your simulation includes several performances of each process. It means that simulation duration should last much longer than the duration of the longest simulation process instance.

Select Process Models for Simulation

There are several ways to select process models for simulation. Process models are added to the Simulation processes tab of the Simulation Properties Window. You can drag the required objects of the "Activities" repository from the Explorer to the tab. Also, you can drag objects of the "Org units" or "Functional Objects" repositories. In this case models of processes whose tasks are performed by the selected org units or functional objects, will be added to the Simulation processes tab.

For your convenience the Select processes for simulation hyperlink is also provided on the Simulation processes tab. You can use it, if you prefer. It opens the Select objects window where you select the required objects of the "Activities", "Org units", and "Functional objects" repositories. Note that if you select both a process and its sub-processes, you will see that only the process is added to the tab. Performance of its sub-processes will be simulated in accordance with the simulation principles described in the Design a Sub-Process article.

If you select the collapsed tree node, its descendants will not be selected automatically. To do this, select the tree node with the pressed Shift button.

You can run automatic or step-by-step simulation by means of or button accordingly. Press any of these buttons to open the Simulation progress window.

Run Simulation from the Process Diagram

Use the button from the Instruments Panel to run the simulation of the process whose diagram is opened. The current process will be added to the Simulation processes tab of the Simulation Properties Window automatically.

The simulation progress will be displayed on a diagram. You will see the number of the completed task instances and occurred event instances. If you run the step-by-step simulation, you will see the movement of the token: diagram shapes will be framed one by one displaying position of each token at the moment (Figure 1).
