Computers can take on different roles when working with Business Studio, and each computer can play one or more roles at the same time. A complete list of roles, their descriptions and the system requirements for the computers that perform them are given below.

Computer roles when working with Business Studio

Workstation is used to install the client part of Business Studio or Business Studio Cockpit. Work in Business Studio will be carried out directly on this computer.
Database Server is a computer used to host the system databases.
License Server is a computer used to provide floating license connections to users and enable user collaboration in the database. Each and every database is configured to use a specific licensed server.
Main server of Business Studio Portal acts as the main server on which Business Studio Portal will be generated and launched.
Auxiliary server of Business Studio Portal acts as an auxiliary server primarily for the generation of reports for Business Studio Portal.
Workstation for batch report generation and HTML publications is used to realize scenarios indicated in the name: Batch generation of reports and HTML Publications.
Server for HTML Publications is used to display HTML Publications previously generated on this or any other computer.
Workstation used to view HTML Publications, work at Business Studio Portal and with the Help facility. The workstation is used to view HTML pages generated in Business Studio and related to Business Studio (Help), not requiring the installation of the Business Studio application itself.
Client service server (external service of Umalogic) is used to provide immediate solutions to errors occurred, register new users, send notifications and links to Business Studio updates.
License control server (external service of Umalogic) controls the use of online licenses. If the server detects the online license being used on several computers, Umalogic suspends its validity.

Note System requirements are for Business Studio only and do not include third-party software requirements.

Workstation, Database Server for 1–5 connections, License Server

The hardware requirements below apply to any role combination. When used in combination with other roles, the individual hardware requirements must be combined to obtain the overall system requirements.

RAM size: 4 GB.
Processor: Intel Core i3 or higher.
Disc memory: 1,5 GB (2 GB recommended) of free disc space.
Network connection: 100 Mbps.
Screen resolution: 1024*768/1280*720 or greater.

For the Database Server role:

For the Workstation role:

To work with diagrams: Microsoft Visio Standard/Professional/Premium 2013/2016/2019/2021.
To generate reports and HTML Publications: Microsoft Word 2013/2016/2019/2021 (except for the Starter edition), Microsoft Excel 2013/2016/2019/2021 (except for the Starter edition), Microsoft Visio Standard/Professional/Premium 2013/2016/2019/2021.

Additional Information on Software Requirements

Microsoft SQL Server

If more than 10 users are to be connected to the Business Studio Server at the same time, it is advisable to use a full version of the Microsoft SQL Server.

The Microsoft SQL Server Express Edition included in the installer has the following restrictions:

The number of processors/cores used is equivalent to either 1 processor or 4 cores, whichever is less.
RAM size is not greater than 1 GB.
Database size is not greater than 10 GB.

Combination of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Visio

It is advisable to use the same version of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Visio (for example, 2013) within each server/workstation. Due to the peculiarities of MS Office, the installation of applications not belonging to the same version can result in errors when working with diagrams and generating reports.

Microsoft Visio

All workstations should use Microsoft Visio of the same version and localization. Diagrams created using different language packs or later versions may not be processed correctly in other versions.

In particular, diagrams created using Microsoft Visio 2013 cannot be opened and processed using earlier versions of Microsoft Visio.
